The past few years has been a testing time for the healthcare waste industry, especially with the progression of COVID-19 and the need to manage an ever changing landscape regarding the type and volume of waste being generated, its classification, identification and provision of appropriate disposal routes. The trade association members have worked collaboratively throughout this time to support each other in meeting these challenges and the marketplace has significantly increased its visibility and engagement with relevant government bodies and other key stakeholders as a result. It is with the support of its members and those participants that the Association has chosen to rebrand itself to better reflect this position as an authoritative voice for the sector.
The Sanitary Medical Disposal Services Association (SMDSA) was set up in 1993. Since then it has grown and evolved to what it is today – a body of members ranging from those offering waste containment and other consumables, to enterprises promoting systems for data collection/recording and waste tracking, waste consultants, washroom service providers, waste collection and transfer companies, and treatment and disposal plant operators. In January 2021, the Association rebranded to become The Healthcare Waste Management Association (HWMA). This new name more accurately describes its role in representing the healthcare waste sector, but it will continue in its quest to champion issues around policy, regulation and best practice on behalf of its members. Its aim has always been, and remains, to be the go-to contact for providers, consumers, and regulators of healthcare waste services.
The Association strives to achieve the highest standards of service and compliance within the industry and encourage engagement from members to achieve this. New applications are welcome from anyone who feels they need the HWMA’s support to influence and maintain these standards, and from those who can contribute to the Association’s knowledge base.
